iPlayer Issues Reports

Latest outage, problems and issue reports in social media:

  • zx_spectrum_30 zx_spectrum_30 (@zx_spectrum_30) reported

@Lord_Arse Thought the sensible move would be to scrap BBC 4 and put it’s content on iPlayer but reading the article seems there may be some regulatory issues there.

  • jonnymorris1973 Jonny Morris 🔶 (@jonnymorris1973) reported

@lemonfreshrob @roy_gill Yes - and that's the big saving they'll be making. I mean, even when I watch BBC Four live, I'm watching it via the iplayer cos the picture quality is better and I can pause/rewind! Why would I ever watch it via Freeview?

  • Cariad_Morgana Poet with Passion. #JOHNSONOUT (@Cariad_Morgana) reported

I've got BBC Iplayer on my android phone and although the volume works, the film is intermittent and often stops completely, while the sound continues. Anyone else having the same problem? @BBCiPlayer

  • JF_1010 JF (@JF_1010) reported

@dannywallace At first I got cross with this, but actually, I don’t even have my Virgin TiVo box connected to my tv. As long as the content is still available via iPlayer, for me and mine, it’s not going to affect how we already consume BBC stuff. Big up for the Assassins Creed work 👍🏻

  • ClareChappell_ Clare Chappell (@ClareChappell_) reported

@MonidipaFouzder My kids can work the TV. I'm not keen to let them loose on a tablet app so they can watch CBBC via iPlayer, esp since the BBC dropped the iPlayer Kids app. I'd have to constantly add/remove parental controls from the app so they don't accidentally start watching eg The Split!

  • RACNOAPOLOGIES Richard Chester (or the angriest 30something Brit) (@RACNOAPOLOGIES) reported

BBC 4 going online only, even if it has become a mostly archive channel, is another reason to cut the licence fee. World cinema in a 9pm or 10pm slot. The Proms. Art. What made the channel work. iPlayer isn't the same thing. Big error from the Beeb.

  • wood_ida_ Ida (@wood_ida_) reported

shows with better iPlayer ratings would suggest better sellability to foreign markets (important income for BBC), but in a work from home and multi-screening world it's not a measure to show success of shows in PSB terms unless u compare directly to commercial opposition

  • fawltytowers69 Joe Hart (@fawltytowers69) reported

@jimalkhalili To be honest we haven’t been able to receive BBC4 on Freeview for years, and switched completely to watching BBC on iPlayer due to building work / Bilsdale burning down. Not sure we’ll ever go back to linear viewing. The times they are a’changing.

  • _Rimal Rimal 🏁 (@_Rimal) reported

@BBCNews Surely BBC four doesn't cost much to run with it having no new content created specifically for it? If the trade off is more archive documentaries on iPlayer it could work. What about 1990s top of the pops - could BBC two show them?

  • basilbrushoff 🦊Basil Brush-Off 🦊 (@basilbrushoff) reported

@howlieT And sadly the BBC are frequently the worst culprits for it - messing with iPlayer has bricked that functionality in an entire generation of "smart" TVs like mine, the shitshow of the iPlayer/iPlayer Radio/BBC Sounds apps, etc...

  • GRALCreates Guy Lambert - guylambert.eth (@GRALCreates) reported

@Miss_Peg They need to find a link between iPlayer and YouTube somehow. I suspect they will try and work it out, limited episode releases maybe. I used to work at CBBC and YouTube cast a shadow even back then

  • Jenzzyuk Jenny Met Seb Stan (@Jenzzyuk) reported

I’ve just heard that The BBC to move BBC 4 online in 2025, I remember when they did that with BBC 3 and it didn’t work,And they brought it back a few years later, so I can’t see BBC 4 working on just the iplayer

  • janemerrick23 Jane Merrick (@janemerrick23) reported

Interesting/sad thing about CBBC: its target age group is 6-12. My daughter (11) probably hasn't watched a CBBC programme for two years, and only then it was The Worst Witch streamed on BBC iplayer. She watched Newsround in Year 6 classroom. And I'm sure she's not atypical.

  • Trooper10617919 Trooper (@Trooper10617919) reported

@HazelRothschild @mhspshadow @davidcavanagh4 cbbc have good programs, Troop like to watch some, will still work on iplayer on the telyvision?

  • miniibabybel Saadia J. (@miniibabybel) reported

@hannahy_y It’s ok - not had much time to watch it really! Busy at work. I have watched some of it on iplayer. I’ll prob catch up better next week during half term. You?

  • thasminpotts elizabeth MET NICOLA (@thasminpotts) reported

@ethanisaac01 that all requires parental control for a child of six who doesn't know how to work iplayer instead of turning on the dusty tv in the conservatory set to the same channel

  • iyiyim Lord Iyiyim of Marmaris 🇪🇺🇬🇧🇪🇸 (@iyiyim) reported

@ZombyWoof4 But they're only moving it to BBC iplayer which is a free service. The difference will be that it moves from a scheduled platform to an on-demand/streaming one. I'm no expert and i might be reading it wrong but if I'm right, not sure it's going to be a problem.

  • MoominCanada Garry (@MoominCanada) reported

@SarahScire @davidakin @BBC I know the BBC mandate is obviously to serve UK first, but it would be great if they could work out a way to have international iPlayer which could be supported by a fee. As an ex-pat, I’d like that and I know several others who would too.

  • back_the_BBC Back the BBC 📺📻📡📱 (@back_the_BBC) reported

@BbcBring They have - Britbox abroad is iPlayer. But main problem is BBC is so strapped for cash, it has already sold rights to most of its programming, so it can't put them on another platform it owns. Eg Netflix already has the rights to Peaky Blinders

  • Jonathon_Carley Jonathon Carley (@Jonathon_Carley) reported

Even if it goes on iPlayer (which isn't even promised at this point), the budget will be minimal and the quality and quantity will be affected, even with the best will in the world. It can never recover as we have seen with BBC 3 and the young adult audience.

  • Lauren0191 Lauren (@Lauren0191) reported

@JonnyMao My son just asks for "iplayer" now to watch that awful rabbit on instead of the actual channel

  • basilbrushoff 🦊Basil Brush-Off 🦊 (@basilbrushoff) reported

@howlieT Somewhat dependent both on the "smart TV" (e.g. mine is about 8-9 years old and iPlayer doesn't work on it because BBC changed the technical backend and LG have never updated the telly software) and households having access to fast internet to stream over.

  • phil_creighton Phil Creighton (@phil_creighton) reported

@TheCyberdevil @Matthew_Kilburn The trouble with it is the people least likely to use BBC Sounds/iPlayer are *probably* most likely to watch BBC Four and listen to 4 Extra. And it is very hard to find archive content in iPlayer/Sounds.

  • SarahWebbPhill1 Sarah Webb_Phillips (@SarahWebbPhill1) reported

@scottygb Really bad move from a digital inequalities point of view. Whether rural Internet speeds or financial restrictions not everyone can access iplayer to stream shows. Locks out high quality educational programs from potentially already vulnerable / disadvantaged people.

  • WelshGasDoc Dave Jones 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦 (@WelshGasDoc) reported

The problem with moving all childrens’ programming onto iPlayer is that parents will then spend a disproportionate amount of time waiting for the kids to decide what they want to watch. The streaming platforms offer too much choice.

  • buttonalltheway CJR 🇺🇦 (@buttonalltheway) reported

@ClaydenBeauty10 Yes! Although IPlayer captions don’t work for me atm, for some reason I can manually add them. I’ll try to get them as accurate as possible though since the accents are a bit hard for me to understand.

  • Naughtylilprin2 Naughtylilprincess12 (@Naughtylilprin2) reported

@DermotMcGrath @cbbc Well what about those parents that can't afford a TV license!? 97% of the UK has internet access, 95% superfast (which you don't even need to watch bbc iplayer). You're making problems where they don't exist. Younger people prefer on demand the BBC is moving with the times.

  • DreamSerpentine AJ, Hooligan Shaman (@DreamSerpentine) reported

@bartlebooth45 True, can't help but think editorial decisions played a role too. The fact they stopped commissioning films from Jonathan Meades and shoved Adam Curtis on the iPlayer in favour of yet more docs about people 'going on a journey' to find out Henry VIII was a *** customer etc

  • donnyfaison Listless Hater (@donnyfaison) reported

@shampaange Just terrible planning all around. Tried to bank hard on iplayer withy asking whether iplayer is even fit for purpose.

  • MacAlbatross Paul Fleetwood (@MacAlbatross) reported

I don't really have an issue with BBC4 going iplayer only, as I don't have a working TV I do have major issues with the BBC not making the serious history and science documentaries that I regard to be a key part of public service broadcasting.
