By doing that you've given Ubisoft the power to revoke a license for any in game item as it is not "owned" by the user. Legally you don't own the skin so they don't have to refund you.

I want Steam to be an equal marketplace, I understand bigger companies have more $ to push marketing/more coverage, but this is an obvious playing favorites to clearly not make Ubisoft go through the same standards as solo devs for a launch.

If you remove it entirely, it will cause the entire game to crash. That's exactly what happened with XDefiant. People failed the game, not ubisoft.
