@buccocapital @MorrisseyHelena All empires die. FB is/was an internet empire. What was relevant at the dawn of the internet is less so now. The business model (and data napping) is outdated now. I never used it to any great degree. Neither of my kids or my wife use it. It’s irrelevant now. Like MySpace and AOL

@Jason Usually it’s lack of adoption that kills a company, i.e. Blockbuster not buying Netflix, AOL waiting too long to move past dial-up, etc. I’ve never seen such a profitable company leaning in so hard on a new technology and failing so massively. Just shocking to watch

@dgordon52 @oliverdarcy I thought the AOL Time Warner would never work. Had all the makings of a dumpster fire. However, the Discovery of Warner Media take over was a **** show without toilet paper. How I miss the late Jack L Warner and Steve Ross.

@LizHighleyman What Twitter has going for it is network effects. And for now it's the closest we have to the Internet I loved (circa 2005). But if AOL and even AIM could die, Twitter stands no chance. Musk way overpaid, and anything he tries is very likely to wreck it.

@charliebilello $Meta Doesn't the fact facebook is trying to catch tic tok by launching reels mean they are in trouble? Remember Friends reunited Aol Netscape and a graveyard of former tech darlings This is the inevitability of most tech co's they simply cease to be of value

@cvrlne AOL message boards and chatrooms from ‘93 to 2002-ish. As people dropped AOL (and dial up entirely) those communities set up web forums that tried to keep everyone together. Those didn’t last long, usually because of moderation issues. Still, far healthier than social media.

if I could send myself a back-in-time "it gets better", it'd just be an AOL instant message that says "on Oct 27 2022, the entire internet gets ready to throw hands at Chandler for talking **** about Keanu" and that high school depression would have just evaporated away

@EverywhereErica Gmail sucks. It’s the only email@provider that runs out of storage so you have to PAY to get more! Even AOL doesn’t run out! #scam
