I get a notification from AOL- this 22-year-old student athlete tragically passed away; I'm reading the story about this great kid, his leadership & he's loved by everyone. After it, there's an arrow to click: "Shop Now". Who TF goes shopping after reading this terrible story?

@JohnProctorDFS AOL chatrooms had some of the most vile toxic discourse I've seen on the internet still to this day. Your point is spot on. People have talked like this behind a keyboard since the dawn of the internet. People didn't collectively try and act on this **** en masse though...

Trying to get on @getongab reminds me of being a kid trying to sign into AOL online at 10pm with dialup internet. The slow wait of excitement, knowing its the place to be. No worries tho, its all good.

@SantiagoAuFund Those barriers will continue to come down over time until the shift is complete to a fully digital world. However, I think most people are underestimating the friction. It took us two decades to go from AOL to Twitter so a complete systemic change will be much longer.

@MRKR @JamesSurowiecki It's long term prospects may go the way of AOL, but headlines like this are a massive signal that this bubble is just getting started. Too funny.

@AOLSupportHelp Hi, I was just told by AARP that because I am an AOL member (since AOL was started!!), AOL will pay for my 5 year AARP membership. What do I do to get this amazing benefit? Thanks for your help.

@xoxogossipgita Aol in its heyday had a specialized company that moderated boards. So it's not like it wasn't the top standard from go. Of course that went away when subscription-based service couldn't compete with "free." (There were also the community moderators that sued, a different story.)
