Rakesh Agrawal (@RakeshSFNYC) reportedBeyond the usual senior leadership problems at AOL that doomed Mapquest, there was another: channel conflict. Mapquest had a LOB that was store locators. They would sell widgets to retailers and other businesses that they could put on their own sites. Split personalities like that are always tough. When one side is paying the bills (store locator) it's hard to ship the future.

Jason Coy (@CoyJason58232) reported@AbakpaJob You're right. AOL gave me access for free for a decade. Phone company didn't charge for the call or extra line. I never had a pop-up ad trying to sell me anything. DARPA didnt pay one government contractor.

Peetie Peete (@Peetie_Peete) reported@BrianRoemmele I was working for NyNex in NYC and installed some of the first residential ISDN data lines. Years later, folks started using dial-up internet service after getting AOL cd's in the mail. Then we graduated to DSL and thought the future is here! It's funny looking back at it all.
