  The crazy part about having dial-up internet was we had to add an extra ~20 minutes to our time of arrival because we had to turn on the computer, open the AOL app, sign in, and then wait for that long dial-up tone before going to the MapQuest site to write down directions.

Bending Spoons closed its first day up 40% on the Nasdaq, roughly an $18B valuation. their portfolio is AOL, Vimeo, Evernote, WeTransfer, Eventbrite, Meetup. the stuff you probably have a dormant login for. the consensus says pre-AI software is a melting ice cube. anyone can spin up a Notion clone in a weekend, so the whole cohort trades like it's going to zero. the CEOs of those companies believe it too, which is why they sell to Bending Spoons for a number that looks insane on paper and reasonable in a spreadsheet. the market keeps mispricing one thing. a brand people already trust with their files, their notes, their event tickets is the hardest asset to manufacture in software right now. AI features are cheap. 500 million monthly users who opened the app this week cost a decade to build. so Bending Spoons buys the loyalty, cuts payroll to the studs, centralizes engineering in Milan, ships AI on top, raises prices, holds forever. Evernote's personal plan went up 63% because the switching cost was always higher than the sticker.

  @whymyPPhurt6969 @PanthersGamer @GhillieYT They will never "pull the license" if u don't break TOS. Even if they cease to exist. U'd still have access. Just like AOL email still exists even though they don't. They just leave your username open. Breaking TOS is what "revocable license" is all about not just when they want.

  @AwakenedOutlaw Most in Northern Virginia didn't even know these Data Centers are here. There are over 300 for Amazon Web services alone and many more new ones being built. They are huge, about 800k sf, all due to high demand. I know as I started working in one of the first, AOL, in the late 90's, all the way up to AWS recently for the past 22 years. There has never been any real issue with water or electric use. The real problems arising look to be Zoning and location issues that have real impact on residences and that is what really needs addressed. WE NEED DATA CENTERS! How do people think the Internet and this platform itself exists? 😎

  I think OpenAI and Anthropic might be the CompuServe and AOL of the AI era. Does anyone actually think Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Oracle, IBM, X/Twitter, and all of the other big tech companies will just allow these 2 badly run startups to capture the AI market? OpenAI and Anthropic don't have a moat or sustainable competitive advantage. To win they have to not only develop a moat but penetrate some of the most fortified moats. Model quality isn't a moat. Kimi, Grok, Deepseek proved that. Inference will become a commodity utility that requires massive CapEx that neither can finance. Interface is where the moat is the weakest. OpenAI and Anthropic do not own the apps or the OS. The OS and apps are owned by parties who view OpenAI or Anthropic as threats, and they can complicate things very easily. As if that is not grim enough, AI sovereignty will become an issue. Consumers will want their iCloud data to stay in iCloud, their OneDrive data to stay in OneDrive, etc. Enterprise customers will want AI from their cloud providers to reduce egress and for performance + IP reasons. It is honestly hard to imagine a world where OpenAI and Anthropic survive as they are. They will either morph into companies with entirely different value offerings or die like Compuserve and AOL.
