@UnconsciousMum Raising teenagers was tough 30 years ago, but we NEVER imagined the impact the internet would have. MySpace and AOL messenger were nothing in comparison to what parents today are forced to deal with.

trying to help an elderly patron clear her cache over the phone today. i asked her what browser she was using. "aol," she said. i thought maybe she was confusing her browser with her email service. but nope. she got online while we were talking, and i heard "you've got mail!"

I have derived a rule for staying sane online, which I wish I'd recognized on Prodigy, or AOL, or Live Journal or worst: Fandom ****. Thus: never make more than three replies in any thread unless you are identifying pictures of plants.

@SophRossss AOL and for really cutting-edge internet geeks, IRC - Internet Relay Chat - was how we were social before Social Media, they don't know how cool IRC was because they have never even heard of it. I've been online full-time since 1997.

@zigvey Reading the private searches of "anonymous" humans after the 2002/4? AOL data leak was eye opening af. I basically watched a person trying to find help about their worsening depression and then the data trail ended

@deep_jake_ Idk, I received free trials from AOL, Juno, Net Zero and Yahoo… I never had to pay for dialup in the 90’s… I’ve never received a free trial to MugClub, only ever been told “piss off YouTube!”

@scrumtuous @toby_solutions @FrancescoCiull4 Uh, I don't think that is in their plans. That's why I've never taken the internet seriously, or branding, or Jobs, or AOL. Or Data Management! Seriously, there is no such thing as a secure computer, put it on the internet and then you've really got problems.
