  @TimSweeneyEpic @deanwball we can also substitute microsoft claiming open source is dangerous because instead of windows regulating the compute, oss linux is enabling compute for everyone and could result in bad actors getting access to unregulated compute. aol can say same about open internet.

  This pro-PRC model industry group from Silicon Valley is interesting but I think not thinking long-term. Why can’t the frontier labs do something like AOL did with its Greenhouse project and say OK, I will let you distill but we want equity in your company and/or a fee. AOL got equity for promotion/placement on the screen. (we committed 30+ million at MarketWatch, helped traffic and the ipo a lot, but worst company I have ever negotiated with). Anyway, apologies for the digression, but why couldn’t this be similar but for distillation access, and the labs like Anthropic and OpenAI could end up with a really interesting portfolio of companies, some of which might become quite valuable, and those smaller firms’ VCs could also benefit? Otherwise, does it really make sense for a huge swathe of the American technology industry to end up dependent on PRC models? Haven’t we learned any lessons from other industries where PRC firms have been able to come in at a very low cost with good products and effectively create dependencies that crowd at all other competitors? And now we are talking about the most transformative industry in many years, and it could be even worse if it’s built in part through some problematic practices in terms of distillation attacks and export control violations, if some of US government’s and frontier labs’ claims are true?

  @omgsidewalks I don't know what you mean by "handed Boomers the internet". I'm solidly a millennial, using AOL and Yahoo chat rooms and AOL cd's. Now I'm nearing 40 and "parent's IT support" is like a 3/4 time unpaid internship.

  @NavigationDeck I am at the point in life where I am not ashamed to admit: - I never dipped a toe in the Apple ecosphere -I never had an AOL account -My last video game was Atari Pong -I admire Tesla but remain disinterested -I learned person to person skills w/ a paper route

  How do all these people have 10s of thousands of "followers"? People that don't necessarily post anything new or just re-posts of other peoples' thoughts & work. I don't get it. I've been a member for a while now (w/ THIS acct - my orig was cancelled by Twitter during COVID for telling the factual scientific truth about masks based on my years in Bio-Nanotechnology). Is it strictly from those "Follow" train lists? I learned early on to stay away from those - I check out EVERYBODY I ever follow first & personally (not necessarily relying upon Grok's "Profile Summary", although those may get me interested to take a gander). I try to engage those who engage with me and avoid silly flame-wars. I don't post to GET followers, I generally post current stream-of-consciousness thoughts, what's on my mind at that moment & not really organizing them into proper English "articles". Plus I'm not really good at pithy comments - I speak from my heart & soul and EXPLAIN myself & my reasoning for coming to different conclusions. And I typically don't engage in irrational, emotional hyperbole & name-calling. I truly want to know what others think and LEARN (you're never too old to learn!). For DECADES on BBSes (Bulletin Board Systems - pre-graphical internet days, modem-connected social systems for discussion, research & debates), the Usenets (newsgroups, pre-graphical/HTTP/HTML internet days when time on the internet was purchased through 3rd party vendors like CompuServe by the hour - 70s & 80s, pre-AOL (which is slightly pre-HTTP/HTML/Mozilla-Netscape graphical internet revolution) - where everything was command-line driven in ASCII, EBCDIC, ISO set or ATASCII or the like). Am I just too old, boring, long-winded, obnoxious, opinionated or what? I know its annoying with me posting about my health, but I've gotta vent SOMEWHERE and NO ONE on X knows me personally. Not that it matters so much now, I'm heading down the stretch-run to Home plate, but even paying for Elon's blue-checkmark, I don't get many hits/views or responses/engagement, it is pretty comparable to my "free" account that I use solely for sports-related stuff where I have 1 whole "follower", which is probably one of those online ho-bags. It's not that I'm looking to "earn" from X and I'll NEVER post things just for click-bait value. I'm just really curious how these other accounts accrue so many followers for literally not doing much,

  When is this country going to stop the monopoly of the internet giants who control the access & content of emails. Google shut down my access, refused payment, yahoo denied access, now AOL denied access. Google, Blackrock, Microsoft, ramped up their efforts to control us.

  @qlypai For @twigl_it I don't think of it as a wrapper around a frontier model, but I guess you could say that. In my view, all frontier models will follow the path of AOL. It's moving rapidly along the same trajectory. AOL mail, chat were all massively popular; AOL's valuation went to the moon, etc. But then dedicated tools came in, and against the single focus, AOL couldn't compete. Once SpaceX launches space-based datacenters along with Starlink, the game will be up. My bet is that the harness is where the value is at. I have really zero loyalty to a particular model; I just want the highest raw intelligence with the ability to throttle down for work that doesn't need it. It's not even clear to me what Anthropic or OpenAI think is actually going to happen. I am sure they can see from their own metrics that like 95% of users are just using it as a glorified search engine. The mass does not care at all about the companies and will use whatever is best and free (i.e., ad-supported). In the long run, Google will likely win. So a true wrapper, like simply putting the API with a bit of context, will become irrelevant to higher levels of intelligence, but I don't think the frontier models can ever win against a superior harness on a really specific proprietary data pool. I am betting that people would rather have more control over their own data, be able to better direct context, and be able to use the best-performing self-healing skills with tools with the most intelligent model that is out there.

  @dark_coderz Stay living with mom and dad, Work for 6 months, put all the salary/pay into Amazon Intel Nvidia and Google stock as it comes available. Stay away from Netscape entirely. Buy AOL and hold it for 1-2 years then sell all. Likewise with Yahoo Beyond that, Dont sell - ever. Just let it ride Avoid the military - great experience but bad things on the near horizon
