  @latimes Yep the failed Mapquest MapQuest was the original online mapping site, launched in nineteen ninety-six by a spin-off from a printing company’s cartography division. It went public, then AOL bought it in two thousand, for about one point one billion dollars. That was the peak. Google Maps launched in two thousand five and ate its lunch — free, faster, better satellite imagery. AOL sold MapQuest to AOL’s own parent in two thousand ten for about one hundred seventy million, a fraction of what they’d paid. It still exists as a stripped-down site, but it’s a ghost of what it was.

  Mapquest holding line on Lake Ontario. I agree, but no doubt it is just a marketing stunt to remind us they exist. I was at AOL when Google Maps launched. The head of Mapquest would send out emails every time they launched a feature saying people would never use Google.

  Claude v Harvey: My candidate at a small, no-name firm is about to turn down an offer from an international law firm because they use Harvey and his current firm uses Claude. Apparently he cannot live without Claude. Can someone explain this to me like I’m my mom in the ’90s discovering AOL?

  @_tinatruth Steve Bartlett explained financial bubbles in one minute. The AOL–Time Warner story is a powerful reminder that HIGH VALUATION IS NOT THE SAME AS REAL VALUE. It reminded me of something I wrote on August 17 on my post 👇 A GREAT ASSET doesn’t automatically make a GREAT INVESTMENT. Pay too much, and your returns can suffer. Allocate too much capital, and one mistake can damage your entire portfolio. That’s why I believe good investing isn’t just about choosing the right asset. It’s about paying the RIGHT PRICE and sizing your position wisely. The AOL–Time Warner story didn’t teach me that lesson. It reinforced it.   @jukan05 I read the beginning of this and knew it’s garbage, written with a conclusion in mind and fillers to get there. Comparing token value to internet subscription is ludicrous. The value of the internet obv is beyond the freaking $50 you paid AOL or whatever ISP. The same for mobile
