@ggreenwald People are leaving this platform in droves. I wouldn't be surprised to see it go the way of AOL soon. Good riddance to bad rubbish. Social Media is anathema to popular resistance and is only a weapon to be used against us.

@hannaford710831 @timhandtech @nhbaptiste I know, right? MySpace and AOL must be broken up!

  • Sadriot3 Sadriot (@Sadriot3) reported

I'm seeing social media sites as big banks at this point... Too Big To Fail. Myspace was huge, then users stopped using it. It still exists, but does anyone feel like it's fundamental to your life? Vine was huge for a short time., AOL chat? Why is Facebook/Twitter different?

I used to get in SO much trouble cause everyone in the house could hear the dial up noise when I tried to login at night... through AOL lmao

@Humanstein I’m wondering if mine was an AOL room, but I can’t nail down the timeline. Definitely read rec.music.dead in 1994 and 1995, and started to be active in rec.music.phish in 1996, maybe? I do remember browsing Hypercard stacks in 1993. But that wasn’t a “community.” @neddyo

  • Davisonbob 🌈Dr. Nostradamus MD💈🏳️‍🌈🇺🇸 (@Davisonbob) reported

@fred_guttenberg @SpeakerPelosi Twitter seems to have a “radicalization” problem as well. I saw that years ago in AOL when I was a monitor for them.

  • scarylawyer Frank Taney (@scarylawyer) reported

@parlertakes Good luck with that. I was on a legal team in 1996 repping AOL when one of the first spam farm cos raised an antitrust “essential facilities” argument against AOL preventing them from spamming. Just because a service is popular doesn’t make it essential, public, or governmental.

  • scotchfairy Lee Thompson-Herbert (@scotchfairy) reported

@word_soup @dorrismccomics @SuperRetroid AOL was never dominant. I was there (on the Net side) when they opened the gates and let the Internet in. At most, they were a bigger, pay version of the various sites scattered all over the net back then. Still have that Music Pirate costume made out of AOL CDs..
