  On the day Michael Jackson died in 2009, the internet collapsed. The LA Times, AOL, TMZ, AIM, and several other major sites completely crashed. Searches for the King of Pop spiked to an insane ~4.2 million per minute. Google believed it was under some kind of cyber attack because of the sudden flood of people searching “Michael Jackson”. Twitter went down and Wikipedia crashed around 3:15 p.m. PDT.

  @thepeacepoet99 Throughout the 80's we'd been told nuclear war was imminent. Literally thought the world was going to end -- then the Soviet Union Collapsed and the western world celebrated! We were full of hope and optimism for a future without the threat of global annihilation. Glam metal morphed into grunge, Goatees for all the men, and flannel on everyone. And weirdly biker shorts, plus ***** packs, doo rags, but also the rise of widely popular rap. Gen X were becoming adult -- much to our non-irradiated surprise. We'd gone from life is hopeless and pointless to life is going to continue so... now what? And what's this internet thing? The internet was inhabited by a select few who kind of had to know stuff until AOL started mailing everyone CDs to give your damn mom access. But still there was no social media -- instead spaces were organized by interests. Which allowed for communal gatekeeping, in a good way. If someone was just trolling the whole Collectable Card Game forum (for example) would boot them off. It wasn't toxic like now. (And there was still a decent chance any Keyboard Warrior would have to confront their victims IRL -- so people were just more chill).

  For me, it's more that this person has spoken to me in 10 yrs then acted like I've never been on SM or the Internet before when I've on the Internet since I was 8 yrs in the infancy of AOL chatrooms and all the SM platforms. I'm well aware of how to post and my posts.

  @kejca I was an advisor for Merrill Lynch during the dot com bubble. Henry Blodget said, to buy Yahoo, AOL, and AMZN, one was bound to be a winner. So, it depends on which package you bought. Chris is generally right, MOST of those ‘winning’ stocks of that day turned out to be garbage.

  The horde is following each other off a cliff believing Madam Media’s hysterics over open source. I believe either Anthropic, OpenAI, or a newer competitor—or all three—will be ten times bigger than they are today within the next text years.
