@aliasvaughn No, its a bad investment. @rob_cyran of @Breakingviews spotted the key synergies that could be used to pay a premium, in the wasteful research unit. Little there otherwise. Massively overbid--at that price, competes with Microsoft/Nokia Oyi and AOL/TimeWarner as worst merger ever

@JackPosobiec It definitely sucks for these people. I can sympathize as I’ve been “there” myself. I’ve worked for AOL Patch and hibu (community magazines). Both did mass layoffs on phone calls. It doesn’t feel fair and I hate that it happens but it’s business - it’s actually that simple.

@followtheh My dear lord.... In 1997, 17 years after H&R Block had acquired CIS, the parent announced its desire to sell the company. A complex deal was worked out with WorldCom acting as a broker, resulting in CIS being sold to AOL. Its like a who's who of bad companies

@JoJoFromJerz @AOC Well, it'd probably just go on as an unused platform. AOL didn't survive as a service that's an email when you can just get internet. Neither did MySpace survive when Facebook bought it out and made it consecutive lists. Then tore games off the platform. Then erased all accounts.

@BriannaWu Federated is fine, in fact good, but it has to be so the user never really knows. Your name service is federated, the web is federated but nobody slaps you round the head saying "guess which web to join". That went out with AOL and Compuserve. More likely tiktok will win

Also, if anyones interested in signing up on #myspacereloaded you should know the site is kind of broken and limited but its an investment. I reinvested in AOL and now AOL is doing pretty well as an email and news service. Myspace started facebook, and deserves a second look.

@UK_Daniel_Card Dude. Usenet IRC AOL ICQ MSM Geocities MySpace Yahoo All never really died, but when the decline set in, they went down fast (and the Twitter decline started before Musk and even before the Pandemic)
