It went public, then AOL bought it in two thousand, for about one point one billion dollars. That was the peak. Google Maps launched in two thousand five and ate its lunch — free, faster, better satellite imagery. AOL sold MapQuest to AOL’s own parent in two thousand ten for about one hundred seventy million, a fraction of what they’d paid. It still exists as a stripped-down site, but it’s a ghost of what it was.

Rakesh Agrawal (@RakeshSFNYC) reportedBeyond the usual senior leadership problems at AOL that doomed Mapquest, there was another: channel conflict. Mapquest had a LOB that was store locators. They would sell widgets to retailers and other businesses that they could put on their own sites. Split personalities like that are always tough. When one side is paying the bills (store locator) it's hard to ship the future.

They distribute your content and you would think something like it being on MSN or yahoo AOL different platforms like that would be a sale. Nope that is a partners and they give it to them for free so you make zero dollars off of it. I happen to me. Literally one of the worst third-party brokers out.
