@siberianpine @remeranAuthor Yeah each of the parts of the audio recording are a necessary component of a handshake that is sent down the dial up line, but there's no reason at all that it plays out your computer speakers, and it didn't take that long by the time AOL was available.

Give away something other than candy. (Toothpicks, golf *****, AOL Disks, etc.) Wait behind the door until some people come. When they get near the door, jump out, wearing a costume, and holding a bag, and yell, "Trick or Treat!" Look at them, scratch your head, and act

@cwarzel Also it was a tour from a (horrible) cruise. I also didn't really like Florence at the time... b/c tour. I think so much has to do with HOW and when you experience places. Both happened when everyone was still dialing up AOL but there was a big difference b/w the two experiences

I just had a dream a prospective housesitting client was grilling me about why I was using a THE OFFICE quote about farts in my AOL profile in 2003. I never did and I don't housesit, but I woke up so embarrassed about my life that I’d rather have just had a nightmare.

VERY proud of myself for fixing a rendering issue that was only happening in AOL Mail / Microsoft Edge and Yahoo Mail / Firefox instead of saying “who on earth is using that webmail and browser combo”

@Coleens_ The context in IRC was folks would login to channels and spam "A/S/L? Wanna cyber?" and go DCC with any takers (hopefully) or we would just jump to another channel. ICQ I used some. A relative used AOL, so I had AIM to chat with her much later, perhaps 99-2000.
