@egyptianruin Prior to the internet (or dial-in services like AOL), going online meant dialing in to a local person's Bulletin Board System they ran from their computer. I used to be a SYSOP (System Operator) of one of those in the early 80s. Talk about slow, the modems were only 300 baud

  • 1223MCMXC Saint Nick (@1223MCMXC) reported

@LittleMissLizz Yeah, can you grab me some of those 1000 hours free AOL internet discs? I have a nephew who complains about how slow smartphone speeds are. He needs a taste of dial up internet.

  • _JoeMills_ Joe Mills 🇺🇸 (@_JoeMills_) reported

@azeem @theycallmebreno That was an AOL thing. They dumbed the internet down for the masses.

  • pamhardiman Pam Hardiman (@pamhardiman) reported

Is anyone else out there going grey hairs waiting for an answer from @AOLSupportHelp ? Ok, they can't offer phone support, but 5 days without access to emails and no response to pleas for help is frankly a bit crap.

  • skylarchriss 🐥 (@skylarchriss) reported

@Hector_E_Alcala I'm 23 and my grandpa still had dial up until I was probably almost in middle school so yes I remember. Used to watch the AOL man slowly move as stuff loaded. Good ****.

  • BergamOhJones Bergamot Jones (@BergamOhJones) reported

This episode also has Data dropping the bomb that he's been trading anonymous AOL instant messages with a pre-warp pre-teen. Like, I trust Data's motives but what ********, dude, is the prime directive a joke to you

  • Scuzz83 Joshua Jenkins (@Scuzz83) reported

@abbydarkstar See I never understood this line of thinking. Most of nerds I know are female. My high school Anime Club, I was the only guy. The local comic shop and AOL message boards about X-men, mostly women. The vast majority of the WoW guilds I've been in primarily ladies. Nerds just are.

  • Eamontron Eams (@Eamontron) reported

@davidschneider She offshored tons of UK Talktalk jobs to India, Malaysia and South Africa. And shut down AOL in Ireland after they trained the UK staff to "help out". Swings and roundabouts I guess.

  • hiswifedaisy Daisy 🌼 (@hiswifedaisy) reported

Thinking about the time I said "****" in an AOL chatroom and got my account temporarily banned. Some things never change.

@joey_gannaio @azeem @theycallmebreno Not really. You could know fine rightly what a URL is but be an AOL user who never uses them
