@Prolotario1 Back in the day, we paid for email. AOL was 9.99 a month. I decided to switch to free Yahoo. Called AOL to cancel. They offered me 3 free months. I said ok, then cancelled. They then sent me a paper bill for the 3 months.

Google's AI features got turned on by default for its 3+ billion users. It's a neat trick for naive investors. "Look at our explosive growth and engagement!" AOL did the same thing with its CDs. I went through six years of school without ever paying for internet. They'd mail out a CD for 45 free days, then all you had to do was threaten to cancel and they'd give you six months free. The difference is AOL's internet and email worked. Google is degrading its experience in both email and search, and throwing user content out the window.

I found a gaffer’s email on AOL when I was in high school and emailed him. He replied within like two days, and then I got starstruck and never replied.

@MVdlJCardinal I had work email/Internet in 1986 (admittedly at IBM, a tech company) and personal email the same year. TVO provided a free email service long before AOL, Hotmail, Bell, etc.

@raheelys Dad was given it at a conference, I think the pitch was you could scan academic cites with it? Never even saw a :c anywhere. It was like AOL keywords that need hardware more than QR codes. Tamagotchi + Monster Rancher would have been a better move.

@brockpierson Used to go to the AOL chat rooms and talk crap on the PlayStation kids like “PSUX!!!” Those were the days.

@ComputerLove_ yeah we signed up with AOL back then, in 93.. then a few years later we tried to cancel, and they didn't actually cancel our account, and kept f**king charging us monthly for the service! idiots
