VibeDraft (@vibedraft_app) reportedspent the morning mapping the 90s internet buildout against the ai era, layer by layer. the rhyme is almost suspicious. 1. the protocol layer. tcp/ip and http were deliberately dumb, open, and free. they beat richer closed rivals (aol, gopher) on adoption, not capability. gopher died from a licensing announcement, not even enforcement. mcp is running the same play: simple, open since late 2024, adopted by every rival lab within months. the lesson transfers: protocols stay dominant only while they stay credibly free. 2. picks and shovels. cisco sold the routers of the boom and became the most valuable company on earth in march 2000. then the buildout paused and the stock took 25 years to reclaim its peak. shovel revenue is a derivative of capex sentiment, not end-user value. nvidia is playing the same role beat for beat, including the most-valuable-company milestone. 3. the capability curve. every app category had a modem speed where it became viable. text at 2400 baud, images at 14.4k, e-commerce at 28.8, napster at 56k. context windows, tool-use reliability, and cost per token are the new baud rates. the question that printed money in 1994 still works: what just became viable this year that wasn't last year? 4. the trust layer. this is the interesting one. in 1994 the web was read-only and nobody would type a credit card into it. then four boring primitives shipped almost at once: cookies (1994, state), ssl + verisign (1995, identity), online payments (netmarket 1994, paypal 1998), and reputation scores (ebay 1995). a controlled experiment later showed ebay's feedback scores earned sellers 8.1% higher willingness to pay. trust primitives, not storefronts, were the moats. agents in 2026: no portable memory, identity duct-taped with api keys, no native machine payments, and tool trust decided by github stars and vibes. we are standing in 1994 of this layer. all four are unclaimed. 5. discovery. yahoo hand-curated a directory. it broke at scale. altavista indexed what pages said about themselves. it got spammed. google won by mining a signal the web deposited as a side effect: links as votes. mcp registries today are the yahoo phase. the pagerank of agents, invocations as votes, does not exist yet. the internet's biggest fortunes came from the boring layer, built in the four years after the protocol went open. mcp went open 20 months ago. the clock is running.
