  @Starlink has got to be the absolute worst internet service it has ever been my misfortune to have to use. Maintains its connection for 20 seconds at a time, slower than aol on dial up

  @TimothyImholt Uh, Boomer here, 18 for me. I never had an AOL account, I went with one of the local small Internet providers instead. I also never had a Walkman, I couldn't afford one, so I bought a cheap knock-off portable cassette player.

  @QueenHasSpoken_ @idpicciotto @VividProwess Yes, AOL message boards existed. Nobody said the Internet didn’t. The point is that comparing the fragmented online forums of 2001 to today’s algorithmic mass social media ecosystem is absurd. And “I was online and don’t remember seeing criticism of Bush” still isn’t evidence that criticism didn’t exist. Your AOL login wasn’t a representative sample of American public opinion.

  I once was shopping a manuscript to agents and I got such positive response to it & this one agent had asked for the exclusive manuscript. I agreed not knowing any better & turned down other requests for the full (stupid me), but it was actually autobiography presented as fiction, about my real life AOL catfish and I used his (alleged) real name because main plot points were directly related to the name & its meaning (& also f him he was a catfish). So her response in the end was that while she was very into my story she couldn't get past the terrible contrived name I had chosen for the character & ultimately had to pass I let myself feel quite embarrassed for ever writing such garbage & I shelved the whole thing, but then later that same name was used in so many popular TV shows, it's like a real name lots of people have

  AOL and Time Warner merged in a $165,000,000,000 deal, and two years later the company wrote off $99,000,000,000 in a single year. The announcement came in January 2000, weeks before the dot-com peak. An internet company buying one of the largest media empires on earth. AOL was the smaller business by revenue and profit. It had the stock price, which was the currency that made the deal possible. Steve Case and Gerald Levin stood on stage and called it the future. Dial-up subscribers plus film studios, cable systems, magazines, and music. Then the bubble burst. AOL's advertising revenue collapsed, and the subscriber business began dying as broadband arrived and nobody needed dial-up anymore. The cultures never combined. Time Warner executives resented being bought with inflated paper, and the AOL side found the media business slow. In 2002 the company reported a loss of about $99,000,000,000, the largest annual loss in American corporate history. Almost all of it was writing down the value of AOL itself. The AOL name came off the company in 2003. The two businesses split apart entirely in 2009. Levin later apologized publicly and called himself responsible. The biggest deal ever signed destroyed more value than most companies ever create.

  @chrishansen @RealSchlep There is this sick narrative going around because of this stupid new movie. When TCAP came out it was a much needed awareness as a victim of AOL predators I know your show raised much needed awareness. All these sick comments going on show that your work is still needed.

Grok 4.5 Expert: Nailed it (2:22 mins) Chat 5.6 Sol Pro: Nailed it (5:44mins) Claude Opus 5: Whiff (no time given) Not only did not Claude fail to pick up the exemption to a sale-related property tax increase, but specifically called out that on sale the buyer COULD benefit from a substantial property tax passthrough to the commercial tenant. Oops. (FWIW our attorney using an aol email address easily picked this up) Q2: "This month's PG&E bill was $5,800 - use this annual bar graph to estimate the full year's expense." Grok 4.5 Expert: $74,500 Chat 5.6 Sol Pro: $75,000 Claude Opus 5: $74,400 Very tight range - useful little hack since we sometimes don't get a full year's utility bills to underwrite, and have to eyeball off these sketchy bar charts. The moral of course is that these systems can be amazing, helpful, even indispensable underwriting tools - but can lead you astray if not used properly.
