these kinds of tiktoks are no different than AOL forwards in the 90s that told women that someone was hiding under their cars in parking lots. it's the same fearmongering that riles up (typically white) women to lock down their neighborhoods.

The fact that I wasn't fazed made him angrier. "I have 36 employees, and they all use AOL and I'm going to encourage them to cancel!" Me: Okay. Is there anything else I can do for you today? Him: That's 37 customers you'll be losing! Why doesn't that bother you?

Imagine if Congress had regulated the internet with only Microsoft and AOL in mind. That's what bad defaults in crypto policy could do to web3. We can't hinder startup and emerging protocol growth, even if the bad headlines persist. We need a sandbox.

@amnaukhan I guess I never really grew up then. You missed AOL, ICQ, IRC, UseNet ... and there was a time we would need to put pen to paper, and entrust the post to.. well an actual postal worker

@J0hnnyXm4s aol is still central to a lot of folks, had a customer just last week that uses it mainly. i've always thought linkedin was just professional facebook too, maybe they're all just merging together slowly...

I Think I Internet Wrong (@SleptMoNSeattle) reported
I remember the era clearly. AOL IM all of a sudden had people who had never had opportunity to talk reach out randomly and tell each other “I’ve never had the chance to talk to anyone outside of my country before, what is it like where you live?” It was a paradigm shift.

@squawksquare $TWTR buyout will go down as the worst deal since TWX-AOL. 91% of TWTR revs come from advertising. You can’t just wave a wand and make the rev mix user fee-based. That’s like dating a guy the opposite of any you’ve ever dated and thinking you can change him into the perfect male.

@RevJDubya AOL was the worst when I handled my Dad’s estate. They locked it out and wouldn’t accept a death certificate as proof. My mother ended up losing all contact with friends at a very difficult time.
