I had no fear of repercussion. Or so I thought. AOL immediately booted me from the chat, and from AOL entirely, well before my 50 free hours were used up. They called my house, spoke to my mom and told her I violated their terms of service by “inciting a riot in a chatroom”. (4)

@chrisgford @CorieWhalen I think it may have been bigger in Canada. That and MSN messenger. AOL has serious branding problems.

The courts declared AOL an illegal, abusive monopoly in the grounds that it excluded potential competitors from interoperating. That's it. By law, if you offer a digital service in the US and you prohibit interoperation, you are engaging in illegal, anticompetitive behavior.

It was stupid, I was 15 and just becoming accustomed to this paradigm shift in communication called the Internet. I wanted to feel the power of my words have an effect on people’s state of mood and mind, frothing the AOL chat into a panicked frenzy. Anyhow, I was anonymous. (3)

@trish_regan @masonbo This is frightening. I'm almost 68 yrs old. and have never seen anything like this. I started out on the Internet when it was just Chat Rooms/Bulletin Boards. Prodigy and AOL. Crying out loud.
