@PhillyMike My best friend worked in one of the towers. Luckily he went to work later than most people. There was no cell service that day so the only way to finally communicate with him was via AOL IM lol

@M_Lynx_3000 Back in the early 00's, one of my uncles worked for a company that AOL was investing in for net nanny software. His job was to basically look at porn all day (not fun). After a few years, AOL shut it down and sold the software off to the Chinese gov't for surveillance.

@mediarchaeology Oh, and I see people mentioning BBSes and AOL. I used both, but never thought about them as social media. (Though I definitely think they count.) For me personally, they weren't "social" though. I mostly used them to download games and utilities.
