  @LGarretson66717 Ohh I never heard of that unfortunately. Once aol started going down and FB started to rise ask Insta it just scattered but Twitter or x. Then you got into it a bit but had to file around

  @syruproxy We met on an AOL aviation message board. 🤭 We crossed paths many times as kids but never met. We met in person a few weeks after nonstop phone calls and we've never been apart. I was on furlough from the airline I flew with, and I said no when they called me back. 📟 didn't work in the countries I flew to and we were inseparable by then. 30 years ago. 🩶

  Researchers tracked 344,753 websites over 18 months to map where American attention actually goes online. The answer is email. Gmail alone is 16% of all desktop time. Add Yahoo, Outlook, and AOL, and inboxes eat nearly a quarter of every hour Americans spend at a computer. That's double the combined total of Facebook, X, Reddit, Instagram, Discord, and WhatsApp. The legacy numbers are the wild part. Yahoo Mail, at 3.71%, gets more attention than ChatGPT, Reddit, and Netflix combined. AOL Mail, a service most people assume died with dial-up, beats Instagram and Discord combined. Yahoo still has roughly 225 million active mail users, skewing Gen X and Boomer: people who opened an account in 1999 and never saw a reason to leave. Google Search sits at just 2.33%. The front door of the entire internet gets less time than Yahoo's inbox, because search is engineered to end fast. Every second you spend on a results page is a second Google failed. The chart measures desktop, which explains the shape. Your phone is where you play. Your computer is where you work. And the work of being an American in 2026, the bills, the receipts, the school notices, the job applications, still runs through a protocol invented in 1971. Strip away 30 years of apps and the desktop internet is a post office with better graphics.

  Been going down a Luca Ferrari rabbit hole and honestly the guy might be running one of the smartest plays in tech right now. while everyone's out here trying to build the next big thing, he's just buying the old ones. Evernote, WeTransfer, Vimeo, Meetup, AOL. products people still love but that got bloated and neglected. bending spoons scoops them up cheap because everyone assumes they're dead. they're not, they're just badly run. and then the fun part. they move everything to italy, strip the company way down, hand the code to a bunch of young engineers who ship like crazy, and reprice the product to what it's actually worth. evernote got 75 updates in a year after basically going quiet. nobody's on call, everyone's just a "software engineer," salaries are flat. someone described it as private equity having a baby with google which is perfect. the numbers are kind of insane too. revenue per employee went from about $1.1m to $2.6m in two years, and they just IPO'd north of $18b and popped 40% on the first day. the takeaway that stuck with me: you don't have to invent the thing. you can just take something great that someone else fumbled and actually run it well. everyone's obsessed with zero to one and he's quietly getting rich on one to n.

  @TimSweeneyEpic @deanwball we can also substitute microsoft claiming open source is dangerous because instead of windows regulating the compute, oss linux is enabling compute for everyone and could result in bad actors getting access to unregulated compute. aol can say same about open internet.

  I “walked” onto the internet using AOL online, the dial-up internet service that functions via telephone wire. It’s a phone call. Used to be 14.4 kbps and that is way lower than 30 Mb of now. Via cable or fiber optics. I am completely just a person. We reset the internet.
