The Fix: It is time to sever the cord. Go to Gmail Settings > Accounts and Import. Look under "Check mail from other accounts." Delete the legacy connections.   The crazy part about having dial-up internet was we had to add an extra ~20 minutes to our time of arrival because we had to turn on the computer, open the AOL app, sign in, and then wait for that long dial-up tone before going to the MapQuest site to write down directions.
