  • rollerska8er My hope day is forever coming closer 🫀 (@rollerska8er) reported

@commieflavus It's essentially when AOL offered people free access to Usenet (a proto-social network) through their service in September of 1993, and the influx of new users never ended (whereas in previous years you'd only get an influx of new users in September as people left for uni)

  • MasterMofeto Guatemalan Insanity Peppers (@MasterMofeto) reported

THEORY 2: AOL's core services such as email don't need to be paid for but people who aren't otherwise on dial-up still convince themselves that they need to pay for the service, so in this instance, the person's already the kind of moron who doesn't realize that email is free.

  • rollerska8er My hope day is forever coming closer 🫀 (@rollerska8er) reported

@commieflavus AOL would send people free CDs, yeah, but you needed a dialup modem to use the Internet. Back in the day, and I can remember this, modems would have to dial into the telephone network, which was why it was so slow. These days, all Internet is dedicated broadband.
