and you have to abide by gmail's rules if you don't wanna get kicked off, but crucially: you can email *anyone* with an email address, whether they're on gmail or outlook or whatever ancient aol ****.

@or_rain @lolennui @AOL why? kinda hard to believe. I'm nowhere near that level and had no problem. Are you trying to run your own instance or just create an account and follow some people?

@nangbaby @brockway_llc Yeah the problem is that Facebook and Myspace are literally just "The New AOL" Instead of an open web we literally have a walled garden again, for no reason. (Ironically AOL could have turned AIM into a social network, but they failed to do so)

@benedictevans @BrendanNyhan it's like using Netscape when everybody was on @AOL. it's figuring out how to listen to podcasts in the early days. there's plenty of people willing to help and everything is better if you can figure it out and enough people move. no ads, algos or data mining. nuanced moderation.

I’d send 350,000 emails to subscribers at 4:00 AM every day back in 1997 using AOL. The “To” field took 1,000 email addresses. BCC’d them. 350 copy-and-pastes to queue them. It would take 30 minutes. Then one click to send. They’d all opted in, so never got TOS’d.

2/5 So far he is destroying his investment at a record pace. AOL was nothing by comparison. Alienating Advertisers, Employees and Customer all at the same time doesn't actually represent a "strategy". Maybe to some of the cheering MAGA contingent, but not to people who count.

@wumbummer Haha, okay, that's perfect and always too true BUT- there are non-Nintendo mags that liked it too and so many other Nintendo games that year were great but players picked AoL so it kinda illustrates people didn't think it was as awful as the rep it got from later internet gossip

Facebook going up in smoke might just boot a lot of old people offline who were never inoculated against being in the armpit of the internet. Like AOL going away, they wouldn't have "The Internet" anymore. I'm counting beans on the abacus to learn the moral value of this outcome.
