Awful mistake. Though if it gets kids reading more again from boredom, that could be one silver lining.

While the practitioner's email system may be encrypted and compliant, there is no guarantee that a patient's personal AOL, Yahoo, or Gmail account has the same level of security. Once information leaves the provider's secure environment and is delivered to an unsecured personal email account, the risk of unauthorized access increases significantly.
