Greg Manuel (He/Him: GIFT SHOP IN BIO!) (@WriterComicNYer) reported@KydJustice If AOL/Time Warner wanted to keep wrestling on their network, nothing happening in WCW at the time would have mattered. Brooks is full of ****.

Michael Morrell (@michaelmorrell) reported@immaterial_ink @solanamobile fully onchain chat protocol like aol instant messenger. pgp for dms. powered by memo program or something. biggest blocker is adoption friction i.e. getting it in an existing wallet app, and/or getting pkeys imported, and establishing a network effect

HitNail (@Hitnail) reported@AOL has me locked out of my old emails. I have the email and passwords. Each is the other's recovery email and both want me to verify with a code sent to the other. An hour on hold and AOL tells me they won't help unless I pay them. Then they hung up on me.

Arlo Gilbert (@arlogilbert) reportedHistory tells us that the companies that are early leaders in a software category rarely remain so. Altavista? Excite? InfoSeek? You're old if you remember those, but at the time they were dominant. Then came Yahoo, then Google... Years later. AOL? EarthLink? Compuserve? They were the Internet for most users. Now? Telcos & Cable cos reinvented themselves as consumer ISPs and dial up mostly died. The historical examples go way beyond software. The point is that although OpenAI, Anthropic, Grok/X, Google are dominating AI right now, things change in ways we can't forecast. The next better faster cheaper different AI solution that erases some current leaders probably hasn't been created yet. I do wonder though, who dies first? I'm talking 5-10 year window.

Michael TheZorch Haney aka The Professor (@thezorch) reported@ColonelFalcon Back in the day, people thought AOL was too big to fail. Then they did, and very quickly. Their massive campus complex was leveled to build a data center that serviced the many startups that sprang up around them in Silicon Valley. Sony is not too big to fail either.

WorgRider (@WorgRider) reported@nostalgames69 Bought a dreamcast just for to play this game. Unfortunately, AOL didn't work on dreamcast. We got DSL a few months later but we had no router and I didn't have the network adapter. The only way to connect online was to directly plug in the modem to it. Dad was not cool with it.
