    One sneaky tact that really pissed me off was how they- meaning the volunteers, so called teachers and host of other AOL advocates- never started with money but dangled a free course or said something like, "Oh, AOL is a non-profit community by Sri Sri" and then...

    correction: @modernserf correctly notes that AOL didn't launch in 1997; it was around since the 80s. But in 1996, they moved from an hourly rate to a flat monthly rate, which caused home internet service to really take off here.
