@francesweetman @underhandrea I was a teen when livejournal, IRC and AOL were social media and thinking back, it was a sign of things to come lol. Digital division in its infancy, but it was never, ever as insidious. Humanity will look back on social media as one of the worst things we ever created.

@ToniWidmo @s_palm @GuardianAus Not an anecdote at all. I remember when it first happened, with America Online. AOL's response was to suggest using "Sconthorpe" to bypass the filter. Someone pointed out that "Am" has much the same problem in Turkish and recommended that the company be called Omerica Online.

@TheRajGiri The primary difference, which is in AEW's favor, is that WBD doesn't own or produce any of the content AEW airs on the network. It's a licensing deal. The AOL-Time Warner merger saw WCW get axed because they were on the hook for all things WCW, including the talent contracts.

@ericibid I mostly can't believe AOL tech support still exists? There was an actual human on the other line, though she probably also had to field calls for people trying to buy MyPillow or invest in gold

Recently learned after overhearing him on the phone w/ AOL TECH SUPPORT that my dad still pays $8.99 MONTHLY for an AOL email address despite me registering him for Gmail ~15 years ago...less frustrated, more concerned w/ what obsolete technologies I'll be clinging to in 35 years

@omnisender Completely agree. AOL solved the accessibility issue of the early internet. Blockchain/NFTs are still waiting for that.
