@FrankConniff @MST3K I took a typing class in high school. It triggered a severe problem with my hands and wrists. I can barely write manually now, and prefer to type. The typing class taught me nothing. I learned from AIM, AOL chat rooms and online gaming.

@chicagobars I still use AOL as well as gmail, but I find their folders and filters much easier to work with. In an emergency if one's down (and that's happened to gmail) you can send/receive something at the other.

If Broken Social Scene was around in AOL IM days I would have had “All those people drinking lover’s spit.” As an away message.

In this day and age, nothing is worse than getting a busy signal when calling a business. What, are you still trying to connect to your AOL on dial-up?

@woke8yearold @orthonormalist Companies can coast on past accomplishments long after they cease being capable of accomplishing anything new. Most of the tech giants laid the foundation for their success a decade ago and ain't done **** since then. I mean, Yahoo is still a thing. Ditto AOL.

@8bitwiz AOL was displaced because they offered a closed social network against the unlimited completion of the Web, after which they had nothing more than a commoditized ISP to offer. Tech and community are interrelated; if tech is closed then options for community are also limited.

Doubtful many will appreciate this, but... My father just asked me if I could “help” him create a new email. But, why, you ask?! He currently pays @AOL $30 a month to “retain” his from the late 90s! He never stopped using, or paying for it, in what is now the 3rd decade since!
