  @Kngsolo305 I was late Gen X. I definitely got a bug dose of video games and AOL hit me hard right after high school. I remember being grounded from going outside and having to stay in my room. It was horrible. Now, kids are punished by NOT being allowed to sit in their rooms. So much has changed.

  let’s start off with the claim that he hacked the cia. reality: justin liverman has never actually hacked anything before, his claim of hacking the cia comes from when his group social engineered AOL to reset a guy who works at the CIA’s email. this is the easiest thing ever 1/2

  @boomer_btc @CitadelDaniel I had a joke that Primal was the AOL of Nostr but looking back it didn’t cause the network effect that AOL did. Both were UX quantum leaps -the internet was ready for it. Nostr not so much.

  @thepeacepoet99 Throughout the 80's we'd been told nuclear war was imminent. Literally thought the world was going to end -- then the Soviet Union Collapsed and the western world celebrated! We were full of hope and optimism for a future without the threat of global annihilation. Glam metal morphed into grunge, Goatees for all the men, and flannel on everyone. And weirdly biker shorts, plus ***** packs, doo rags, but also the rise of widely popular rap. Gen X were becoming adult -- much to our non-irradiated surprise. We'd gone from life is hopeless and pointless to life is going to continue so... now what? And what's this internet thing? The internet was inhabited by a select few who kind of had to know stuff until AOL started mailing everyone CDs to give your damn mom access. But still there was no social media -- instead spaces were organized by interests. Which allowed for communal gatekeeping, in a good way. If someone was just trolling the whole Collectable Card Game forum (for example) would boot them off. It wasn't toxic like now. (And there was still a decent chance any Keyboard Warrior would have to confront their victims IRL -- so people were just more chill).

  @lili_poobear @Phantom_King_99 @gizalovespizza Ok, look, you can probably find a half dozen slightly different definitions of the word "evolve" online (we both know you didn't use a dead-tree dictionary). But the fact remains, to not evolve is to stagnate. Even the definition you gave, if converted the boolean opposite, would say, "to NOT develop gradually, especially from a simple to a more complex form", and you could then argue that OP wants it to get more complex, but RAPIDLY rather than SLOWLY. The point is technology should always advance. Just because you're unhappy with some specific implementation of technology in the present, doesn't mean that "advance" will mean "things get worse". It's pretty childish to take that position, in fact. I mean, for ****'s sake, you're ON THE INTERNET right now, probably using either wireless broadband, or wired broadband access to post this message. Can you imagine sitting in at your computer desk, with the monitor riser and built-in CD-ROM storage slots, dialing into AOL in about 1996 and saying, "GAH! I don't want technology to evolve any more. I'm tired of sitting here waiting for JPGs of John Stamos to take 40 seconds to load. I'm tired of getting my directions from Mapquest!"

  @MuseumCommodore 17 for me. Never used a TAC-2. I am too young to have seen a C64 running in a store. But I have left things like the 10-print maze running on a C64 I found in use at a daycare. I sadly missed QuantumLink. I called the 800 number once, and an AOL rep answered.

  @barandbench @_arnaC_ Complete waste of time of NGT and SC in such issues. Their shouldn't have been any case in the first place. Yamuna gets polluted, encroached by illegal dumping and construction, but NGT does not do anything. But they become very active on AOL 2 day event on damaging environment!!

  The horde is following each other off a cliff believing Madam Media’s hysterics over open source. I believe either Anthropic, OpenAI, or a newer competitor—or all three—will be ten times bigger than they are today within the next text years. The media is giving emotional reasons for the impending doom of frontier models. They’re spending more than they make isn’t evidence when every revolutionary tech giant did the same. That they’re doing it at unprecedented scale is a stronger version of the same point. Anthropic has penetrated about 1% of the enterprise market. Use cases are in their infancy. LLMs are the AOL of the AI age. We haven’t even gotten robotics and healthcare and everything else. The hyperscalers are only starting to show the analysts how slavishly emotional they are. The economists pointing to history books have never been right. They were the same group claiming we’d hit a new all time high plateau in 1999. History never repeats and rhymes only when you tilt your head and squint. In reality, reality is a complex adaptive system that requires constant analysis and logical assessment.
