You had to figure it out and there were no forums yet like stack overflow to tell you if your code was wrong. You’d text a guy you knew for answers on a 3 inch flip phone screen and you’d get on AOL voice chat or call them to figure it out. Hence why I became an engineer instead of a full time developer. It was really hard and most people I knew failed out of comp sci and became engineers. It used to be the hardest degree you could pick outside of advanced mathematics. I took years coding classes. HTML and CSS, C++, python and at the end of it you’d barely be able to code a calculator, card game or website and they looked like ****. I was the best web developer in my class and I still had a website that looked like I threw up on the screen because that’s all that the code would allow you to do. Lots of windows lots of boxes lots of squares in general. Everything was square and grids were big. Bright colors and ****** animations. But there were no rules. You could quite literally create anything you wanted and there was nobody to tell you no. I mean there were a dozen websites you could watch the Iraq war and people getting blown up. Crazy **** that doesn’t exist now or only on the dark web. They live streamed people dying and you’d go to school and there’d be some crazy *** video your buddies would show you that would scar you for years. We saw guys go record wars, dudes ******* all sorts of weird stuff, people hurting themselves and everyone had a crazy video and they never got taken down or suppressed. They were just there on Google if you searched for it. Everyone was creating the next big website similar to the AI craze. We didn’t have online Call of Duty you’d have to LAN party so we would build **** with our friends and you’d code all weekend in between halo and drinking at the dorms all weekend. Code all day then party all night and repeat. I was the infrastructure guy and I could build the hosting platform and my buddies would help me code while I did the network and servers. You’d actually have to hand out business cards in public once a business website launched because SEO wasn’t a thing yet. So you had to sell people in person. It was awesome. I wish we could go back.
