Help! Millennials Trebucheted My AOL !!

  • alexwhalen Just Be Kind. That’s it. That’s all. (@alexwhalen) reported

At the time, AOL was made up of something like 18 channels. Two of us ran 1/18 of the entire service, and they cut both of us without even letting our boss know. We had literally built it from scratch. There was no knowledge transfer, no prep, nothing. Just “leave by noon.”

@TheRealWaylo @RealMamaEagle why you using up all your AOL free trial discs to talk **** then?

@ThatEricAlper I don’t know. Roger Ebert, Peter Noone. I spoke to Ringo Starr a few decades ago on AOL when he ran a small group discussion. People were pretty rude, but I did get to talk to him a little bit.

  • socalsalty So Cal Salty (@socalsalty) reported

@susaninseattle1 Yeah those were heady days. I was also involved with the first mobile ad network. That co became Millennial Media, and then they were bought by AOL

  • mikescrimes Prime Minister Charles Edward Cheese (@mikescrimes) reported

@RogersHelps Rogers Ignite has to be the worst and most unreliable internet service I've had my entire life. AOL dial up was more reliable.

  • Teuvz Matthew Charlton (@Teuvz) reported

It's not the first time I see this happening - remember AOL Forums? IRC? Geocities? Myspace? Skyblog? MSN? Internet users are nomadic by nature but this time is a bit different: we're not moving because we found a nicer place, we're moving because an idiot set fire the village.

@film_girl I will never forget when I worked at AOL and the desk infront of me, behind me, and beside me were laid off. I took my lunch and cried in my car. I had my family and had just bought a new car.

@UK_Daniel_Card Dude. Usenet IRC AOL ICQ MSM Geocities MySpace Yahoo All never really died, but when the decline set in, they went down fast (and the Twitter decline started before Musk and even before the Pandemic)
