@PhillyMike My best friend worked in one of the towers. Luckily he went to work later than most people. There was no cell service that day so the only way to finally communicate with him was via AOL IM lol

@gbildson @pkedrosky this was also before the pay per click search model. Netscape charged search engines $200k/yr to appear in the drop down search. Netscape did end up selling to AOL for $4 billion.

@richgel999 I know some software people back in the day who were selling to big companies that required postal receipts of delivery Like, they couldn't buy/use the stuff unless it was physical. The solution? Their software company sold expensive re-written AOL floppies...

@xerynx @Lansing_Rawls @laquiglette Lol. Yup! The magic prefix was a certain card that it took like a month to figure out it was bunk, instead of the week it took the other ones. There was a thing for a bit where you could pull up the AOL help page which would stop you from being charged
