Businesses had local area network emails like Banyan Vines, MS Mail, or Novell NetWare. Consumers online services like Compuserve, AOL, or local BBSes (remember FIDONET?). When Mail Gateways showed-up it was a mess. There were competing standards for messaging, like X.400. 2/3

@magickalslave After AOL, ICQ, Skype... everything's just a flash in the pan. Hence never getting into Telegram. An account was too much trouble for the info I was willing to share. And I've gotten friends's ids on other services... So I have 0 clue who anyone is in my Steam friends list.

@MikeIsaac The reason this was fought at the API level in the past is not to blame the customer and make it their problem… which is exactly what Twitter just did. It’s dumbfounding & AOL strategy c. ’94. But a huge opportunity for competitors to differentiate in a non-walled-garden.
