  When Netscape was acquired by AOL in 1998 for $4.2B they were still unprofitable but had >50% revenue growth and dominant market share with revenue projected to grow at a 44% CAGR and surpass $1B in just a few years. Sound familiar? You wont guess what happened next: $MSFT bundled Internet Explorer with Windows for free and took 80% of the share overnight. If you don't know how to apply this historical analogue to today I cant help you.

Nearly 19,300 firm-period observations. Fastest ever: AOL at 103% CAGR, and even that was a merger artifact with Time Warner. OpenAI's projection: $13.1bn (2025) → $284bn (2030). An 85% CAGR from a base no company that size has ever compounded from. The earlier $184bn-by-2029 forecast implied 118%. The mean 5-year nominal CAGR in the data: 6.9%, with 11.1% standard deviation. OpenAI's forecast sits 9 to 10 standard deviations out. Mauboussin's caveat is fair, base rates are dynamic and the past doesn't make it impossible.   @ThrillaRilla369 I was a mainframe systems programmer, I did not 'surf the web' back in the day, terribly insecure (worse now). I used IBMLink my entire career. We used arapnet, other early networks to research data at Berkley, UCLA, JPL. Mainframes are secure, always have been. When PC's, the web for everyone, AOL came out, we laughed and stayed with secure connections. We had email on the mainframe, profs (under VM) for word processing, long before the public knew what those things were. There is no security out in this non-ethernet world now! Https means nothing. Data mining is to be expected and reading terms and conditions should have intelligent people running from certain apps. I have never had a FB presence, nor will I. I constantly ask anyone around me, family, churches, friends, who pressure me for one app or another, "did you read their terms and conditions?" I know, Thrilla, you wanted cute answers. I'm supplying truth. X is my only social media and my husband had to talk me into it. Now, I'm a posting, replying, liking, following fool! But I won't download any other.

  @TheGrillGeek I never had AOL but a different version of online messenger. Never owned a waterbed but have experienced it. I never owned a record player but seen it in action. Does that give me 19 or brings down my score to 16? Also, I still use a checkbook 👵
