@girdley We did not grow up on email. I sent my first email my freshman year of college. The online service I used was Prodigy. Most friends didn’t have anything. Some had AOL or Compuserv. We couldn’t email across platforms.

@MuldoonMartin @kevinolearytv You’re proving my point, though. AOL did not last as a ‘walled garden’ service. It didn’t achieve scale until it basically became just an easy, out-of-the box way to connect to the global internet - an earlier innovation that we now take for granted is the universal base layer.

At one point, 50% of CDs produced worldwide had AOL logos printed on them. And I bet you're wondering, "Why didn't Microsoft or the other companies copy it?" Well, according to Brandt, they thought it was insanely stupid. Probably due to their aversion to risk taking or costs.

So Jan got to work to find a way to get users to try the service. If users could just get the AOL experience they'd be sure to buy it! She came up with a crazy idea!

Jan realized that online services aren't like typical consumer products when it comes to marketing. She didn't need to convince consumers to choose AOL over the other online services. Because nobody knew what an online service even was!
