@octothorpe PCPursuit wasn’t shenanigans. Totally legit service that let you use TeleNet (dial up backbone used by aol and compuserve) to make outbound calls in other regions. Was like $30/month. Now you could get to places to learn about shenanigans using it…

@CGasparino @apolloglobal @verizonmedia Verizon paid $4.8 Billion for Yahoo and $4.4 Billion for AOL. Only to dump both today for ONLY $5 Billion. Lesson: Tech stocks are NEVER a "buy and hold".

"The transaction is the latest turn in the history of two of the internet’s earliest pioneers. Yahoo used to be the front page of the internet, cataloging the furious pace of new websites that sprang up in the late 90s. AOL was once the service that most ppl used to get online."

@craigcalcaterra Can you imagine telling someone in 1999 that a company you’ve never heard of would buy AOL and Yahoo?

As expected, Verizon has sold Yahoo and AOL to PE. That was a costly, horrible & embarrassing experiment in content-land for them in recent years. I’ll withhold comment about the value of these sites in 2021, though.

Apollo is buying AOL for just $2.5 billion. I invested in that company at $100 billion in 2000. Sounds like a good dip for me to average down into. #valueinvesting

Maybe $VZ and the 'value-play' stock pickers should get together and share nightmare stories. Investments or just very bad & embarrassing acquisitions should be the not-to-do examples in every business school case study. Maybe $T will buy AOL to reunite Warner & AOL! Hilarious.

If Apollo can bring back AOL instant messenger AND kill Facebook I’ll take back one or two bad things I’ve said about private equity. This would not include anything about them bankrupting pensions and destroying communities.

Does Verizon selling AOL mean I don’t have to use that “service” for Email anymore???
