  @brockpierson Yes. Prodigy (Prodigy Interactive Personal Service) was a commercial online service that people accessed with a dial-up modem over regular phone lines. It launched publicly in 1988 as a joint venture of IBM and Sears (originally developed as Trintex with CBS). You installed their client software on a PC or Mac, the program dialed a local access number, and you connected at typical early speeds of 1200 or 2400 bps. Later they added faster modem support and, in 1994, web access. It was one of the “big three” consumer online services of that era, alongside CompuServe and AOL. Users got news, weather, email, bulletin boards, shopping, stocks, games, and similar features through a graphical interface—not the open internet at first. Startup kits sometimes even bundled a modem. The classic Prodigy service ran until the late 1990s; after that it shifted toward being an ISP before fading out.

  @MurrayHillGuy1 This guy (me) dating history: - Dated co-worker at grocery store in college, married her after a year, divorced after 9 years. 2 beautiful daughters (who are now 33 & 31). - Dated a former co-worker briefly. - Dated a girl that IM'ed me on AOL Instant messenger, married her after 3 years, divorced after 18 years. 2 beautiful daughters (who are now 21 & 14). - Dated a younger woman (25) on a dating website for a year, bought her a ring but never proposed. Only broken heart of my life (at 50). - A few short relationships from dating apps but nothing longer than 1-2 months. - Long distance relationship with a younger woman I met on IG (we had a mutual). Lasted 4 years but recently fizzled. Back to Square 1!

  I'm old enough to remember the days when people said the internet would never catch on and just be a fad. Look how far we've come from dial-up and AOL. We're at a similar beginning now with AI. When change is unavoidable, you have to embrace it, if you are to survive.

  @BrianRoemmele I was working for NyNex in NYC and installed some of the first residential ISDN data lines. Years later, folks started using dial-up internet service after getting AOL cd's in the mail. Then we graduated to DSL and thought the future is here! It's funny looking back at it all.

  Starlink, MTN, and Orange are all terrible today in Cameroon. I can’t even get a connection on MTN or Orange, and Starlink is running like 1990s dial-up. I used to log into AOL faster than a webpage loads on Starlink right now. Isn't there supposed to be a Blood Moon tonight? Not that any other blood moon I’ve been a part of changed anything, but TikTok has me convinced I’ll wake up on a new timeline tomorrow.

  @Dan_Jeffries1 Gates never said this. In the 1990s, Microsoft focused on proprietary online networks (MSN) rather than the 'internet'. Think AOL. The 'internet' was a side product you got by connecting to their proprietary service. Downplaying to be the source of connection = marketing 😐
