@octothorpe PCPursuit wasn’t shenanigans. Totally legit service that let you use TeleNet (dial up backbone used by aol and compuserve) to make outbound calls in other regions. Was like $30/month. Now you could get to places to learn about shenanigans using it…

@maximlott @PCivilization @PrisonPlanet The barriers to creating a web site are far lower than creating a power company. We’ve had competing social network companies for years, from AOL to MySpace to G+. Creating another WalMart would be harder, but we don’t demand they give away products for free.

@davidgerard @Frances_Coppola "Compuserve is bad enough, but this AOL thing is laughable. Look at all the resources they are wasting mailing out floppy disks that just go into the trash!"

I dislike junk, clutter, and general materialism that doesn’t serve a practical purpose. With that said, I miss magazines from the 90s that came with cds or floppy disks. One I remember was Toy Fair issue 1 with the AOL floppy that first got my family online.

AOL in 2000: If you want to use AIM on a third party program I don't give a ****. Embed AIM in Quake for all I care. Facebook in 2021: If you even think about sharing a tweet in my proprietary Messenger app I will make it look like the worst, most unusable thing you've ever seen.

@L422Y I tried to reconnect with an AOL/IRC friend again through Facebook, found out she had just gotten charged with a DUI on top of being under investigation by her state’s bar. She never answered

AOL tried to stop Microsoft from setting up MSN Messenger to also send to AIM and a bunch of companies sued them! Like "**** you anyone should be able to message on your app"! There was an anti-trust suit and the OpenNet Coalition was founded. Where ******** is that energy now?
