@ccwu I remember being a Quantum Link subscriber on my Commodore 64 and 300 baud modem and that service disappearing fairly quickly. I only learned later from Kara Swisher's book on AOL that Quantum Link was the precursor to AOL.

@octothorpe PCPursuit wasn’t shenanigans. Totally legit service that let you use TeleNet (dial up backbone used by aol and compuserve) to make outbound calls in other regions. Was like $30/month. Now you could get to places to learn about shenanigans using it…

@maximlott @PCivilization @PrisonPlanet The barriers to creating a web site are far lower than creating a power company. We’ve had competing social network companies for years, from AOL to MySpace to G+. Creating another WalMart would be harder, but we don’t demand they give away products for free.

@zbornstar @HawleyMO Well, dating back to 1996 it was meant to protect online service providers like CompuServe, AOL, and Prodigy (as well as phone companies who we dialed into services from) from getting sued if crimes were committed using their services.

@greta I'm afraid if I plug my iPod into my current computer that I'll lose songs that I paid for, like has happened before. Apple is a computer company. Why didn't they track which songs customers bought under various emails - especially when they had an agreement with AOL! Apple sucks

So if you ever wondered how AOL (which is also Yahoo) makes its money now: They enable 2FA on all the old accounts, because you probably don't have that phone number any more, then extort you to get the 2FA updated. Requiring you to get on the $4.99/mo support plan.

@geostylegeo It won’t clunk out, It’ll either be broken up as a monopoly, or it’ll become irrelevant like AOL, EarthLink, and so forth.

@HNHughson @RadioFreeTom @TheAtlantic the Simpson ushered in the casual use of "swear" words, Crap, Sucks (by daughter was bounce off AOL for using that word) in its way it coarsened the American language. No judgement, just true

@fyreemblem Teens just shouldn't be on twitter or other social media websites. there's no need. They seem wholly unsatisfying without pre-existing social relationships in general. People were always being weird on sites like neopets - they were never "safe." I grew up with AOL chatroom busts
