@octothorpe PCPursuit wasn’t shenanigans. Totally legit service that let you use TeleNet (dial up backbone used by aol and compuserve) to make outbound calls in other regions. Was like $30/month. Now you could get to places to learn about shenanigans using it…

@maximlott @PCivilization @PrisonPlanet The barriers to creating a web site are far lower than creating a power company. We’ve had competing social network companies for years, from AOL to MySpace to G+. Creating another WalMart would be harder, but we don’t demand they give away products for free.

@despair yeah, that's why I broke down school and home, because each was either safe or not for each kind of person. you could still get messed with on MSN, AOL, etc. but you could block! which was also pretty cool

@ToiWeezy Even tho I'm locked down now, I can honestly say... since 2002-2003 I've never been cat fished... like since yahoo/AOL chat days. If shorty didn't have a web cam, we wasn't speaking lmao. I had me a 20 dollar web cam and a plastic mic and was pulling chicks lol.

Can you believe it? As of 2017, 2.1 million people STILL use AOL dial-up service. These mostly rural Americans face expensive and unreliable internet access.

@misconfig_exe @Bandrel LOL. My social engineer skills were honed from hours on the phone with AOL support pretending to be my father. Damn you CATWatch01.

2/2 centralized and open at the same time. A lot of people got their first exposure to the web on AOL, for example. But news needs to have a single point of congregation. Twitter was providing a useful service there.
