  After 71 years, the longstanding mail-order media club Columbia House is shutting down on Sept. 15. Columbia House got its start in 1955 as the Columbia Record Club, a direct-mail marketing program by CBS/Columbia Records. New members were promised a free record for joining, and customers could bypass a trip to the record store by ordering albums to be shipped to them at home. It was such a wildly popular venture that by 1963, it represented 10% of the music retail market. As the club spawned imitators, Columbia set itself apart by licensing titles from other labels, giving members a larger catalog to choose from. In the early 1970s, the name of the club was changed to Columbia House. With its introductory offer of “8 CDs for a penny,” the service remained a powerhouse throughout the late 20th century, peaking at 16 million members in 1996, the same year the Columbia House website went live. In 1991, Sony and Time Warner formed a 50/50 joint venture combining Columbia House with Time Life's home video and music clubs. As the market share for mail-order music clubs declined due to the rise of online and big-box retailers, Sony and AOL Time Warner sold 85% of Columbia House to the Blackstone Group. There were widespread reports of a planned merger with CDNow or Blockbuster Video, but neither came to pass. In 2005, Columbia House was sold to its competitor BMG, and then to JMCK Corp. It rebranded as Direct Brands, shutting down music sales and continuing as a DVD and Blu-ray Disc club. Plans to launch a vinyl record club with Columbia House branding did not materialize.

  @BlueHawkLegend I get that, but the amount of utility is not enough to say that it’s being used at any kind of scale really. It’s like the beginning of the Internet when we had Netscape and AOL. It seems like everybody was using it, but most people weren’t. And out of the entire planet only five people have exposure to crypto that’s nothing imagine what percent of that is actual utility. It’s insignificant it’s hard to see because we’re immersed in it all the time and we think everyone knows about it and we wonder why people aren’t doing something about it why they’re not buying bags of it. It’s because you’ve done all this research and you know what’s going on and you’ve been knowing what’s going on for probably years so it’s frustrating because stuff isn’t happening but it will and when you look back, you’ll be like holy crap I was so freaking early and I had the patience of a saint and you’ll pat yourself in the back and then go jump in your swimming pool of whatever precious gem you fill it with lol who cares what everyone else is doing and what the price is doing if you’ve done your research, you know where it’s gonna go and that’s all you have to have Vision and the faith and the patience to wait for it to happen

  @JimmyC1366 Purchased a desktop computer in the early 90's at Costco for $2500. With a dial-up modem and slow as a snail. And the only way to make thing work was to buy an AOL or other stupid cd disc and pay outrages bills to them.

  @edward18517 @Reenlsober To the complete contrary, you have franchises like Zelda who have NEVER (Not counting AoL) used numbers to denote main titles. I'm not taking a side, just having fun sharing ideas.

  @BostonBridget .@AOL is 36 now; even if she chose to thaw out a few, and have them fertilized and implanted, how old would she be when she had her first pregnancy? Every extra year increases the odds for a bad pregnancy and disabled child. @JillFilipovic

  @JohannBiermann1 The bit worth adding: they never sell what they buy, so this isn't a flipper; it's more like a hospice for tired apps that turns a profit. AOL and Evernote under one Italian roof is a sentence that shouldn't exist but does.

  Hey @HeyHeyItsConrad I’m listening to ur pod w @EBischoff on @WWE invasion & I think the real path to go down would be if Turner bought WWF & Eric had that money to bring in WWF talent into WCW & do invasion or another storyline.Might,need to say AOL merger never happens either.
