  @pizzahut I really don’t know how a powerhouse corporation loses its standing. Cutting costs on supplies, overextending locations, hiring a new ad company, promotional programs that managers can’t really work- but Pizza Hut is following the pathway of Toys R Us, Blockbuster and AOL. I’m going to avoid my usual florid word choices and just tell you, I paid almost $70.00 for a recent delivery. It was 45 minutes late. The Food was room temperature. 2 Cold drinks were missing. And a dessert item was doubled. BTW can anyone tell me what a delivery cost is? And why would the drivers tip default to 18%? Tips are to insure promptness. It didn’t work this time. The driver was not really an employee, she was hired on by another company and could offer no explanation except - “This is what they gave me.” Along with, “Sorry it’s late.” And, “You can go on the website and let them know”. Going back on that wonky website is the last thing I wanted to do, I’d almost rather eat room temperature food and apologize to my buddies for the poor culinary turn out. I called the store, but no one would talk to me ( it just rang ) so here I am letting all you fine people in cyber space know about it. A loss of quality control is sometimes accidental, but I also think it’s because the employees really don’t care. I’d guess further that the employees don’t care because they think their bosses don’t care.

  But AOL knew a threat was approaching. Broadband internet was gaining momentum. The problem? AOL’s business model was built for the old internet. The slow, dial-up world. To compete with broadband, AOL thought it needed something it didn’t yet have: World-class content. A merger with Time Warner would give AOL access to some of the most valuable media properties in the world. Together, they believed they could dominate the future of the internet.

  The top 10 companies that crashed in 2000: Cisco, Microsoft, Intel, Lucent, JDS Uniphase, WorldCom, AOL Time Warner. While the internet and computers did become really big, the market was wrong about every one of these companies except Microsoft, and there was plenty of opportunity to buy it after the crash at a much lower price. (Intel and Cisco are still around as major companies too, but they were extremely overpriced then compared to what they are worth now. Terrible investments even if you had a very long time horizon.) Amazon was considered a minor company (and it crashed big time), Apple was considered a minor has-been company (and it crashed big time), Google wasn't a public company yet, and Facebook didn't even exist. So the point of this is to not believe the market hype about which companies are going to benefit in the long run from AI.

  @2147mill The problem with the normie test is that the internet passed it in 1999 too. Totally non techy families were on AOL back then as well, over 20 million of them by the end of 1999. Amazon went from 17 million customers to 25 million between 1999 and 2001 and nearly doubled revenue, and the stock still lost 94% over those two years. So usage only tells you the thing is real. For the bubble question I look at what people pay for the earnings. Cisco was over 100x forward at the 2000 top, Nvidia is under 20x right now. Same thing with the crypto half of your post by the way. Nobody uses gold day to day either and that never made gold a bubble.

  As the numbers kept falling... Another problem was unfolding inside AOL Time Warner. The merger had combined two companies with entirely different cultures. Many of the original Time Warner executives saw AOL as an overvalued internet company whose success had been built on a stock market bubble. AOL executives believed Time Warner executives simply didn't understand the future. Instead of building one company... The two sides spent years pulling in different directions.
