@munin It's likely true, just without the detail. A configuration/code change ... caused a withdraw of all BGP announcements, and they couldn't roll back. Their internal communication (FB Messenger for FBers) was down. Keystone kops for hours to get physical access and revert by hand

@ItsJamieDrfc96 Itv news said it is very serious. Think it was a cyber attack on Facebook. Plus WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook messenger are all owned by Facebook. That's why they all went down. Back to normal now. Plus every network went down. O2, Vodafone, three and EE

In a blogpost, Downdetector said the outage was global and the largest it had ever seen. “Facebook is currently experiencing a rarely seen global outage that is taking out Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.”

@llmunro It's used widely by businesses large, small, and micro here in the Netherlands. I communicate with most of my friends and family scattered across the world using it, and to a lesser extent FB messenger. The outage made for a very lonely and unproductive few hours.

Whatsapp, Instagram and Facebook messenger recovered after major outage. WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Facebook Messenger were down for many people, meaning it was a major outage Globally. There were more than 1.2 million incidents of people reporting issues.

@invisibleeswift wth that’s crazy. Pretty much all phone plans here come with unlimited texting and almost everyone I know has an iPhone so if they don’t have service you can iMessage with your home internet on the same app. People who don’t where I live usually use Facebook messenger though
