I've been nerding out some of the issues under the surface with @IBKR. I'm not sure on this stuff, but this is what seems right: Example 1: They cannot today cross longs and shorts, each must be in its own account. They use an argency model. Unless they cut out those agents, I believe it'll be hard to get much lower than the .75% spread cost, as the agents take so much of that. The big banks for comparison can get around 50% of their positions in house for easy to borrow stocks, so there is practically zero cost. Example 2: They cannot take treasuries as collateral, and instead must use cash. The banks get to use those treasuries on the repo market, creating an ultra low financing cost. Is it even possible for $IBKR to get on there, or is that for banks only? Example 3: For Japanese shorts, they have to use the regulated short borrow desk which has a 1% floor. A handful of large banks get to skip this, and you get more like .2% cost of borrow on shorts. If anyone has good insight into this broker plumbing, please share here or in DMs.
