Daniel Micay (@DanielMicay) reported
@drwilco @thingskatedid @signalapp SMS via IMS / SIP pretty much always works but VoLTE has a lot of phone and carrier compatibility issues so a lot of people are going to lose the ability to make traditional phone calls once 3G is gone (VoLTE also includes calls over 5G although they rebranded it officially).

@edent @signalapp Aye. Converting an amazingly interoperable tool like @signalapp into yet another isolated silo is a terrible plan IMHO. Hope they reverse course
-
nullwavemusic (@nullwavemusic) reported
@signalapp Absolute trashcan decision. What a way to kneecap your own app, piss off your current users, and turn away new users. Oof, just so, so bad. Talk about an unforced error/own goal.
-
Vader (@LVad3r) reported
@signalapp Terrible idea. Been here since Whisper text and red phone app days. You're 100% frustrating a long loyal user base for few good reasons.
-
Benny Powers 🇨🇦 بيني باورز 🇮🇱 בני פאוורס (@PowersBenny) reported
@signalapp This terrible idea is the end of signal, and there are no good alternatives
-
zerØchain 🇺🇦 (@zer0chain) reported
@signalapp such a terrible decision. It would certainly make me leave Signal, sadly.
-
Chuck Frain (@chuckfrain) reported
@signalapp So you’re not going to fix the group messaging problem between iOS and Android users within Signal now i guess. I’d hate to think this probem was too much to fix and is causing you to abandon SMS.
-
Jim Lippard (@lippard) reported
@LitMoose @signalapp I used to, but just gave it up recently because Google's does better for spam filtering, and I had had some issues with Signal not working just before the Twilio breach. I'd rather keep a clearer distinction between what's via Signal and what's via SMS.

not blank (@RTG_CyberSec) reported
@signalapp Terrible move
-
Daniel Micay (@DanielMicay) reported
@drwilco @thingskatedid @signalapp That's true in many places due to the availability of 3G or even 2G. Carrier texts and calls for 4G and higher are implemented via SIP / IMS using mobile data. US carriers are shutting down their 3G networks. This can be problematic because VoLTE support isn't universal at all.

CircuitSwan (@CircuitSwan) reported
@weems @signalapp (not theory, but fact, b/c when she got a new phone one time the ATT store did not bring signal down as the default sms app)
-
Hypersensory Space Rabbit Bonnie Smalley (@Bonniezilla) reported
@signalapp Guys, this is a terrible move. I'll probably move to another platform. SMS enabled me to educate people on encryption and how easy it is to switch to encrypted SMS with your app. You did not think this through.
-
Darkglade (@darkglde) reported
@signalapp This is a ******* TERRIBLE move, as others have noted, the reason I've been able to get a lot of people to switch to Signal is the fact that it's a one-stop-shop, they don't HAVE to use two different apps to message people depending on what they have. They'll just go back to SMS
-
Chris (@GhostChalk) reported
@signalapp This is disheartening :( SMS support was the reason I used/was able to get people to switch to #Signal. That's the problem with encryption message apps - everyone you talk must be on the same app or it doesn't work. Time to go back to an #unsecure, data stealing, sms app I guess
-
Grand Nagus Nog (@PeaceAlgorithm) reported
@chazchaz102 @signalapp And then complain to me their phone must be broken now because they can't send me videos anymore.
-
Tom (@tjkirch) reported
@signalapp What a terrible, short-sighted decision.
-
Anton 🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@_atjn) reported
@signalapp Your app is very good at making people aware that they are talking over an unencrypted connection. There is no transparency issue, on the contrary, you are constantly reminding people what SMS is, which has undoubtedly nudged many to use encrypted messages more.
-
jet yes *that* jet (@allartburns) reported
@deviantollam @signalapp My wife is having this problem on her iPhone, I'm seeing no problems on my Pixel 5.
-
👻Fiendishly Spooky Dr. Noid🎃 (@_noid_) reported
@docwho76 @philosophene @signalapp Not super sure I'm getting what you're laying down. The fact that there's a myriad of messaging apps is a problem, but you decide which ones you participate in. In this case it's a matter of having encrypted/unencrypted text messages in one place
-
Stephen Harris (@sweharris) reported
@signalapp @hacks4pancakes Terrible idea; will result in _less_ Signal usage. If I need to know if someone is on Signal and then chose the app to use I'll default to lowest common denominator; SMS. I know some iPhone users who removed the app 'cos of this separation; now Android people will do likewise.
-
Sherrod DeGrippo 📬 (@sherrod_im) reported
@deviantollam @signalapp Happening to me on iOS. Frustrating and can’t figure out how to fix it other than always opening the app to check
-
(((Jonathan Kamens))) (@jikamens) reported
@djchateau @_noid_ @signalapp I think the issue is, what about the people who don't understand the risk, i.e., most people. I am not sure how you make the people who understand the risk happy without seriously endangering the privacy and safety of a much larger number of people.
-
hayden aiken 🇺🇸🤝🏻🇺🇦 (@aikensource) reported
@markus_ottela @signalapp Okay, but speaking practically again, Signal just has to update their UI to make it harder to "accidentally" switch to SMS. Make it so it's not a convenient toggle anymore. Done. Based on what you're saying. If sending SMS is the problem, Signal has more potential to idiot-proof.
-
b73tt (@b73tt) reported
@signalapp It's going to be extra annoying having to switch to SMS during the times when Signal takes an hour to deliver messages. On the plus side, the load on the servers is going to go way down when half your users disappear.
-
Roy Berman (@Mutantfroginc) reported
@deviantollam @signalapp I was having such issues once and reinstalled it. None since
-
Will (@OldMrCB) reported
@mer__edith @signalapp Removing SMS is hands down a bad idea. This will directly cause users to stop supporting you and switch to another option.
-
👻Fiendishly Spooky Dr. Noid🎃 (@_noid_) reported
@docwho76 @philosophene @signalapp Because right now I have 1 app for secure and unsecure texting. I don't see that as a problem that needs solving
-
Kelly Kane (@h110hawk) reported
@signalapp This is a terrible decision which needs to be backpedaled. The whole reason I use signal is the single interface. No RCS until there is an API sounds like a feature not a bug.
-
Blenster (@blenster) reported
@deviantollam @signalapp I've had issues when using Bluetooth headphones but it's been okay otherwise.
-
Docwho exists (@docwho76) reported
@_noid_ @philosophene @signalapp I guess I dont understand the problem. why do you need sms support in signal?
