@SimonCatRiley Lycos. I remember when Lycos was the best. Then it was outcompeted by AltaVista. I never thought Yahoo was any good, even when it was the most popular one. And AOL's mega-intranet which seemed dated by 2000 but by now a strange precognition of social media.

Many companies use this in their marketing . 1. Netflix charged monthly rentals for all you can watch , to minimise the incremental pain with every movie purchase 2. AOL switched from pay-per-hour to pay-per-month internet service . Their subscribers flooded.

@420AttyChicago We had two, one was my dad's from before he got married and then my parents wanted a second for some reason. Wanted to make sure old friends and family could reach him. Around 1995 the old line became the 24/7 AOL connection. Was hot **** never needing to log off
