@DrewLawDesign Controversial town - In 1996 AOL's obscenity filter (among others) refused to accept the name due to its embedded word 'c*nt'. Online forums displayed the name as Scumthorpe, or Scoonthorpe. This censorship over-reach is known in the computing world as the Scunthorpe problem.

I have my phone set to play the AOL "You've got mail!" sound whenever I get an email. I've never used AOL. I just think it's a useful sound that differentiates it from other notices, nobody else uses it anymore, and it always makes people look at me funny.

  • jamesjgriffin James J. Griffin (@jamesjgriffin) reported

@IslandHodl @Inchhighprivate @KanavKariya The only open decentralized global computer network. Bitcoin is to other cryptocurrency as The Internet is to AOL/Prodigy/Compuserve circa 1995.

  • aschwortz Dr. Andria C. Schwortz (@aschwortz) reported

@Utwitily If I wanted internet at home, I had to sign up for AOL’s free trial, and cancel it later, myself. My parents didn’t want internet badly enough to do it themselves.
