CompuServe when I first got online in 1995, MSN Messenger, the very occasional foray into Usenet. Tried AOL, ICQ, a few others. But never enjoyed them. Had both AIM and Yahoo Meseenger But only very rarely used them.

@Miss_Snuffy Self pity finds many friends online from the earliest days of community forums up to today's toxic social media. "Share your support" we used to say at AOL and people did and lots was valuable, but a deep streak of 'alternative truth' bedded down there too to solicit attention.

When it first arrived — and I made a blog there within the first two months of its public existence — @tumblr was the near perfect blogging platform. Then AOL destroyed it. Now it’s a horrible jail where I can’t get rid of this dumb screen. Thanks @automatic.

@teleject @meyerweb It kinda does though... With MSN Explorer (yes that was a thing in 2001, competing with AOL) we enabled "toast notifications" and the name was because "the little thing popped like the toast on the screensavers." Real toast never does that. It sits there. It sometimes Burns.

@ThatEricAlper Logging on to AOL instant messenger on a computer to tell your sibling to get iff the internet so can call your house phone. But then AIM not showing anyone as logged on, and realizing that the busy signal is because someone was actually talking on the phone!

@michaelmiraflor @Aerocles @MattJMcD Why is it a problem that they’re asking what web3 is? To me, that’s a great sign that they care. This is so new in any practical sense. The web itself didn’t matter to most without the browser & AOL. Web 2 didn’t matter for most until Facebook. Most people need real applications.

@snoringelbow Legit amazed how people constantly ask for the attitude era to come back while simultaneously forgetting all the hot garbage that happened around that time. Tony doing that was akin to Vince in that AOL chat talking about WCW.

It's interesting (to me and prob me only) that nothing was learned from walled-garden AOL on the effects of a closed loop family/friends medium on critical thinking. The Internet going commercial broke them out of that for good or bad. FB simply recreated for those demographics.

@Skymage23 @Windows I've been illegally streaming and downloading my entire life from AOL 1.0 in chat rooms all to Napster to torrents, and I can't remember a single time I said oh **** I think I got a virus from that last file. Fear almost always comes from the ignorant. Never from veterans.

Overheard in 2021: 1. I could use help with my phone. 2. We have different phones, but I can try. 1. I can do it on my computer, but on my phone, when I try to log into AOL... 2. Stop. I can no longer help. Why would you want to do that? Names redacted to protect the innocent.
