With MSN Explorer (yes that was a thing in 2001, competing with AOL) we enabled "toast notifications" and the name was because "the little thing popped like the toast on the screensavers." Real toast never does that. It sits there. It sometimes Burns.

And Then A Miracle Occurred (@ATAMOPodcast) reported@alphafox Back then parents would pay me $20 for a visit so I could 'tune' the computer to run CDROM games. For additional money, I would install them The Internet. (I collected the AOL CDROMS from people who just wanted to throw them away). I did not need to persist the login, just get them on the WWW so they can read stuff. Parents loved the electronic newspaper. When AOL expired, they could have me over again to set it up. $$$ (New CD, New Login, same WWW)
