    @SnarkMaster3000 @Known_Edward Winsock wasn't bad. Windows 3.1 was the problem. Early ISPs charging so 🤬 much for a 56k connection was bad. Free coasters from AOL was nice. I even made a few windchimes!

    @SethDillon Twitter can never fail, just Ask Jeeves, Napster, AOL, Compuserve, MySpace, Friendster, Alta Vista, Netscape, Prodigy, Excite, Geocities, Palm, Compaq, Gateway, etc. We were about to dance on its grave, when one controversial guy brought it back to relevance. Twitter will fail.

    ...I had always used some different names but never felt particularly married to any of them. However, after that day I decided that my name must be Axton, though I kept my numbers at the end. Those numbers were the first autogenerated numbers I had since my first days on AOL.

    The earliest example of a virtual world mmo i found is from 1986, and it was called habitat and it was by LucasArts for the online Service quantum link, which was a predecessor to AOL

    @Gurdur The hypothesis that humans caused mega-fauna extinctions definitely was - both in academia (same leaders as today’s PC) and in social media. I personally got flamed for it on AOL boards mult times (bc it goes against general narrative of ‘west is bad’ and ‘noble savage’)

    @ElBartoArmy @SoundsnColor I got my start in software dev due to a phone call from a friend who was convicted as the first hacker to break into AOL's network, he now works on the kernel at Google. The job he called me for was a startup being founded by a former television star of Dr Quinn Medicine Woman.
